It’s starting to feel like the early 2000s when magazines for the “multicultural, urban woman” were plentiful. We had Honey, Suede and Vibe Vixen, and of course, that good ol’ Essence all in print. (Allow me to pause to shed tattooed tears.) Technology has changed the way we send, receive and read information so we’ve become quite accustomed to clicking the mouse or peering into our phones to check out all of the wonderful online magazines for ladies. From Clutch to Madame Noire to the redesigned Essence Online to ForHarriet.com and Vibe Vixen Online, there’s no shortage in the latest in fashion, culture, entertainment and lifestyle happenings.
But there’s still something about a magazine you can hold in your hands. Maybe I’m just sentimental, but nothing beats it (don’t believe me, check my bio). I’ve had and hope to continue to have a successful run in web writing because it’s the way of the world now, but I’m willing to bet nothing makes a writer and a magazine buff happier than flipping through a magazine.
So you can imagine how happy I was to see the debut cover of Pynk, headed up by super editor Shanel Odum. When I decided to ditch pipe dreams of becoming a PR guru for my real passion of magazine journalism, she was one of the first to take a chance and let me write for Vibe Vixen Online in 2007 after the print version folded. Later she become the Head-Bee-in-Charge of HoneyMag.com when it relaunched online in 2009.
Now, she’s lauched her own print magazine on newsstands July 11. She’s proof that the grind pays. Take note.
